The Republic of Korea’s Saemaul Undong Centre this month offered Lao officials and community representatives of Vientiane province the benefit of decades of experience in rural development. The centre, located in the capital Seoul, organised a training course for Lao officials from Xaysettha and Sisattanak districts, and district and village authorities and residents from Hadxay and Phonhae villages in Thoulakhom district. The group of 22 attended the course, titled ‘Saemaul Training for Foreign Leaders’ from June 1-10. The participants gained a wealth of knowledge from sharing in the Korean development experience, which shaped South Korea into the economic power it is today. The Saemaul Undong Centre has played an important role in helping to develop South Korea, according to Lao Ambassador to South Korea, Mr Souphaphone Keola. During the course trainees learned about methods of community development to improve living conditions, especially village contributions to road construction and government-assisted agricultural production.
