The Lao government has agreed to allow the Vietnam Electricity (EVN) International Joint Stock Company to conduct a survey for the proposed Nam Mo 1 hydropower plant in Xieng Khuang province. The memorandum of understanding was signed between Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr. Thongmy Phomvisay, and EVN Director General, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Huan, in Vientiane yesterday. The signing ceremony was attended by Director General of the Ministry of Energy and Mines’ Energy Promotion and Development Department, Mr. Xaypaseuth Phomsoupha, and representatives from both the government and company. The company plan to spend more than US$ 100 million on the survey and construction of the Nam Mo 1 hydropower plant, which would have an installed electricity generation capacity of 62 megawatts (MW). The survey period is for 18 months, with a 30 year concession to be granted if the project goes ahead. The plant would supply electricity to local networks and for export to Vietnam. EVN is the largest power company in Vietnam, managing assets with a combined installed electricity generation capacity of 8.860 MW.
