A high-ranking delegation of the Minister delegation of the Lao PDR led by its Foreign Minister Dr Thongloun Sisoulith attended the 2nd US-Lower Mekong Ministerial Meeting took place on July 22 on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM43). The meeting was co-chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem and US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. Foreign ministers from other Lower Mekong countries, including Cambodia, Laos and Thailand also attended the event. The ministers discussed measures to enhance the multifaceted cooperation between the US and the Lower Mekong countries with a focus on environment, health, education and infrastructure. At the meeting, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a cooperative programme in the fight against emerging pandemic threats in the region and a three-year programme to assist the four Lower Mekong countries in strategies to address the impacts of climate change. The ministers agreed to establish a coordination mechanism and to regularly hold the Senior Officials’ Meeting. They also reached a consensus to hold the 3rd US-Lower Mekong Ministerial Meeting in 2011.
