Chinese and Lao hydropower investors expect to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for tariffs on energy generated by the Nam Mang 1 hydropower plant with Electricite du Laos this month. The plant will be located in Thaphabath district of Borikhamxay province, about 105 km from Vientiane. The project is a joint venture between two Chinese companies and a Lao investor. After the signing of the MOU, the parties will contine negotiations on a power purchasing agreement (PPA). The developers will also conduct negotiations on a project concession agreement (CA) with the Lao government. Construction of the plant will take about two and a half years to complete at an estimated investment cost of about 771 billion kip (US$ 90 million). The developers signed a project development agreement with the Lao government recently, after the government approved the results of a project feasibility study. The Nam Mang 1 hydropower plant will have an installed capacity of 57 megawatts (MW). It would be able to generate more than 200GWh of power annually to be used for domestic consumption.
