At the 2nd Vietnam – Thailand Energy Forum held in Bangkok on October 6, Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee Vo Van Hung also informed about the difficult situation of Quang Tri Coal Thermal Power Plant project, invested by Electricity of Thailand International Company (EGATi) in Quang Tri’s Southeast Economic Zone, which renders Quang Tri province very passive, unable to face difficulties and pressures in the process of local socio-economic development.
Quang Tri province proposed the Governments of the two countries, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, and the Ministry of Energy of Thailand to put more efforts to promote investment and cooperation in the energy field, in which, the cooperation in energy connection through the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) is the focal point. At the same time, there is an official decision on the future of Quang Tri Coal Thermal Power Plant project.
At the headquarters of the Ministry of Energy of Thailand, the provincial delegation participated in a bilateral meeting between the Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Energy of Thailand, the Electricity of Thailand (EGAT), the Thai Ambassador to Vietnam. Lan in Vietnam to discuss the future of Quang Tri Coal Thermal Power Project, invested by EGATi.
On the basis of considering the recommendations of the People’s Committee of Quang Tri province, assessing the factors of obstacles in the financial arrangement of the project and the owner’s equity after nearly 11 years, as well as the COP26 commitment to achieve net emission reduction to zero by 2050, the Thai Ministry of Energy confirmed to stop implementing the power project in Quang Tri province and will have an official document soon.
The Thai side also suggested that the Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Quang Tri province continue to support EGAT and EGATi to seek opportunities to invest in other renewable energy projects or invest in infrastructure for them in Vietnam in general and Quang Tri in particular.
