The tourism sector has played a significant role in the development of the Lao economy, according to the Lao National Tourism Administration (LNTA). The latest report from the tourism board shows the sector generated revenue of about US$ 263 million in 2009, becoming the third largest income earner in Laos after the mining and hydroelectricity industries. Tourist arrivals reached 2 million people last year, an increase of about 16 percent compared to the previous year. This is in spite of the world economic recession and political turmoil in neighbouring Thailand, which is the main gateway for tourists entering Laos, the report points out. Increasing tourist arrivals from Thailand and Vietnam, in particular during the 25th Southeast Asian Games in Vientiane at the end of 2009, helped to make up for lower tourist arrivals from Europe and the US. People ranging from hotel owners to driver, food sellers and vegetable growers will be able to earn more if tourism continues to grow. Tourism is one of the fastest-growing sectors; it plays an important role in the socio-economic development of Laos by creating jobs, promoting and conserving the fine customs of the Lao people and contributing to poverty reduction in accordance with Party and government policies. Laos was recognized as one of the safest worldwide destinations for international travelers when it received the World Peace Gong.
