Laos and Vietnam have agreed to increase cooperation based on their political relations, and will focus on economic effectiveness and consolidation of the two nations’ relationship. The decisions come following a meeting between Lao Vice President Bounnhang Vorachit and Vice President of Vietnam Ms Nguyen Thi Doan in Hanoi on Monday to discuss the ongoing relationship between the two countries. The agency also reported that Ms Doan praised the successful organisation of the 25th SEA Games, a major regional sporting event, which she said helped boost Laos’ prestige and position in the region. Both sides reached unanimity on promoting the history of Laos-Vietnam relations, and agreed to build a President Ho Chi Minh commemorative zone in Laos and continue searching for the remains of Vietnamese volunteers in Laos who went missing during the Indochina War. The two sides also agreed to develop their common border as one of peace, friendship and cooperation, and to accelerate the pace of a project to upgrade the system of border markers.
