Construction of the largest electricity power plant in Laos will kick off the end of this year according to a Lao shareholder in the project. The ground breaking ceremony for the Hongsa lignite project is planned for November. Planning for construction of the 1.800 MW electricity power plants was well advanced and the preparation for the project began in 2007. The project developers expects to reach a power purchasing agreement with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) this month, one of the decisive conditions for them to secure funding for the project. The construction of the about US$ 3.5 billion electricity generating facility would take five years to complete, adding that commercial operating of the power plant will begin in 2015. The concession period begins on the execution date and ends 25 years after the commercial operation date of the project, according to the agreement.
